A definition of Yoga Therapy -
Yoga Therapy is the adaptation of
yoga practices for people with health challenges. Yoga therapists
prescribe specific regimens of postures, breathing exercises and
relaxation techniques to suit individual needs. Medical research
shows that yoga therapy is among the most effective complementary
therapies for several common aliments. The challenges may be an
illness, a temporary condition like pregnancy or childbirth or a
chronic condition associated with old age or infirmity.

Yoga Therapy is usually conducted
on a one to one basis. It tailors yoga to a persons individual
needs, taking into account their health problems, constitution and
circumstances. Yoga Therapy can be used along with any medical
treatment and in conjunction with other complementary therapies.
Yoga therapy can help with the
treatment of many health concerns: Pregnancy, Anxiety, Arthritis,
Asthma, Cancer, Diabetes, Depression, Headaches, High Blood Pressure,
Pain, Addiction, Low Back Pain, Heart Conditions, Hyperventilation,
Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome,
Fibromyalgia, M.E, Sports Injuries and Women's Health
Problems. It promotes the innate healing resource of
the body, helping to restore the proper functioning of the bodies
systems.
What happens in a session?
Yoga therapy starts with very simple
exercises. People can begin to practice and benefit right away,
even if they have never done yoga before. Commencing with
stretching and breathing exercises, students gradually progress in
stages to a range of asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing exercises)
and relaxation practices.
